- Filipino martial arts refer to ancient and newer fighting methods devised in the Philippines. It also incorporates elements from both Western and Eastern Martial Arts which is a reflection of our rich culture and history. It is commonly known as Arnis, Eskrima, or Kali. Other names in various regional languages include Garrote, Pananandata, Pagkalikali, Kabaraon and Kalirongan, Kaliradman, and Didja. It is characterized by focusing on the use of single or double weaponry both bladed (i.e. – Knives, swords, etc.) and impact (i.e. – Wooden canes, staffs, palm sticks etc.). Unarmed techniques are derived from the principles learned from the use of weapons.
I have no martial arts experience. Will I be able to train in Filipino Martial Arts?
- No prior martial arts experience is needed to join the training. What is expected is humility, commitment to the training and a good moral compass. Ultimately, the goal is to produce upright individuals capable of protecting themselves, their loved ones, and ultimately the whole of society.
Are there any fees that I need to pay?
- Yes, like in any good school that provides quality training, payment of the appropriate fees is only but proper. RRK usually charges 350php per group class session but additional fees may vary especially at non-park locations. There is a separate fee for those who wish to avail of private sessions. What should I expect and bring during my first Rapido Realismo Kali (RRK) session?
- Your first session will involve an overview of the basics of RRK such as history, core values, striking, footwork, etc. You may bring a pair of rattan arnis sticks if you own a pair already. If you don’t, training weapons will initially be provided for you. Please do bring water and an extra shirt as well. You will also be evaluated by the instructor during this session. Everyone must go through the Baguhan (Level 1) curriculum to provide a solid foundation for learning the art.
What should I wear during class? Is the purchase of uniforms required?
- First timers may use any comfortable/athletic clothing. The use of an RRK training shirt is be highly recommended. Purchase of the formal uniform is optional.
I want to focus on knife training only. Is this possible?
- Absolutely Not. Our knife curriculum is intertwined with the whole RRK curriculum. Due to its nature, we do not teach knife work separately and to just anyone especially without first learning his or her personality and character.
I have a black belt in another system and/or martial art? Can I get an RRK Instructor license over a weekend course?
- We would like to stress the RRK is an independent, progressive, and effective system of self-defense and fighting tactics. It is not possible to come with a black belt from another system and/or martial art and get an instructor license in a weekend course. Everyone has to go through the same process of education. This is the only way we can make sure that instructors understand the principles and techniques of the system. Although, the more experience you have from other systems and/or arts, the easier it will be to gain knowledge and proficiency in Rapido Realismo Kali.
